I have a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P PC running XP SP3. I've recently replaced a defective Conexant modem with a new Intel HaM Controllerless PCI device:

PCI\VEN_1813&DEV_4000&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_02

No configuration issues are apparent in Device Manager and can query the modem OK in the diagnostics tab.
It appears to be able to connect to an ISP PAYG number (can hear the modem communication and only fails because no userid and pw supplied).

However, if I try to send a Fax (e.g. from fax console) it dials out OK but gives "The line is busy" almost immediately. As if it was interpreting the Ringback tone as a busy signal. I've also tried MightFax and get the same symptom. Does not work incoming either.

Any ideas?

John.

Hello again, elandri.

Please forgive me, I edited your post. It's an intel HaM ("Host Accelerated Modem"), not 'HAMR' (which, if I remember correctly, is a SmartLink soft modem).

First, here are some links for the modem:

What country is the modem set for? When you install a modem under Windows it normally picks up the country setting from Windows itself. Getting the wrong country usually gives a "No Dial-Tone" error, but I can well imagine other tone-response errors turning up as well.

Here are the country/code settings for your modem (you should be able to see this within at least one of the responses to "Query modem" within 'Diagnostics' under 'Phone & Modem Options' in Control Panel) (ait12):
Quote:
[Countries]
Country0=61 Australia
Country1=43 Austria
Country2=32 Belgium
Country3=86 China
Country4=357 Cyprus
Country5=45 Denmark
Country6=358 Finland
Country7=33 France
Country8=49 Germany
Country9=30 Greece
Country10=354 Iceland
Country11=353 Ireland
Country12=972 Israel
Country13=39 Italy
Country14=81 Japan
Country15=423 Liechtenstein
Country16=352 Luxembourg
Country17=60 Malaysia
Country18=31 Netherlands
Country19=47 Norway
Country20=351 Portugal
Country21=7 Russia
Country22=34 Spain
Country23=46 Sweden
Country24=41 Switzerland
Country25=44 United-Kingdom
Country26=1 United-States

Here are extracts from Tips on Configuring the Communication Software (chapter 4):
Quote:
    During initial setup of the communication software, it will normally prompt you to define the type of fax/modem that you are currently using. The following list guides you on how to select the proper device type:

  1. For modem device type, choose Hayes V.32 or Hayes compatible 2400 Baud modem.
  2. For the Baud rate, choose any speed between 38,400 to 115,200. Your fax/modem will automatically adjust to the optimum transmission speed after successfully connecting with a remote fax/modem.
  3. Many communication software use the modem response to control program flow. Make sure that the software is set to recognize a CONNECT 56000 response. If this does not work, set the program to simply recognize just the CONNECT response without any baud rate information.
  4. There are three flow controls: none, hardware (CTS/RTS), and software (XON/XOFF). Set your software to use either hardware or software flow control. If set to none, the communication software will not be able to detect a buffer overflow and result in transmission errors.
  5. For fax device type, choose TR29 Class 1.
  6. For fax speed, choose automatic or fastest speed. Your fax/modem will automatically adjust to the optimum transmission speed after successfully connecting with a remote fax machine or another fax/modem.
