Hi Humtum143, welcome to Modem-Help.

That's a question that we are all asking, without result so far.

Thomson have released it to the ISPs, but it seems that the ISPs will not release it to the likes of you & me. If you spot any, please let us know.

Found it!!!!!!!!!

Important Note - It will ask you for User and Password after the upgrade is finished! Make sure you have 'Modem Access Code' for this upgrade, check under the router, it must be 10 digits. Do not upgrade with this firmware if you dont have the code or lock your Modem!

Code:
User: Administrator
Password: (You Modem Access Code)

Enjoy!

Well done, Humtum143.

Is this SIP firmware?
Is it generic (`AA')? (perhaps post the results from your System Information page)
Which country is it from?

'Modem Access Code' ... check under the router, it must be 10 digits

Can also be found whilst upgrading if using the Thomson Upgrade Wizard (clicking on 'Details' button - will want current password if not the default blank password) or by issuing the following command in Telnet:
Code:
:env list
($_MODEM_ACCESS_CODE)

The file will be available from the ST780/ST780WL download pages later today:

Yes, this is SIP firmware and also has 'Dynamic DNS' function. The previous version 7.1 did not had 'Dynamic DNS' function.

Here is the information page:

Product Name: ST780
Serial Number: CPxxx3LTxxx
Software Release: 7.4.4.7
Software Variant: HD
Boot Loader Version: 1.0.6
Product Code: 3xxxx800
Board Name: BANT-R

My speed has increased from 9Mbps to 10.2Mbps. Laughing

The firmware has been downloaded 2 times, please let us know the results! Idea

Elion is an Estonian ISP and the config in this firmware has a few things preconfigured for them (PPPoE, IPTV, ntp, etc). As far as I can see you need to use the cli to reconfigure as the config wizard doesn't seem to be available in the gui.

It does seem to allow a secondary SIP registrar but I need to check this out to see if it works Very Happy

I notice that Thomson appear to have removed SNMP - is this a general v7 thing (in the same way that TG585v7 lost SNMP when going from v7-v8)? Maybe they're having problems fitting firmware in available memory and are trimming things down?

Hi MrC99, welcome to Modem-Help & thanks for the info. I've updated the warnings on the download pages to reflect what you have said.

The simple way to handle that is to save the config before upgrading, and (if necessary - the Wizard should do it for you) restore after.

There's no info in the ST-780 Release Notes. That does not mean that they haven't done it, of course, just that they have not released the information. I've had a quick look in the r7.4.2 CLI Command manual & SNMP is referenced (dsd debug proxy, expr add, + others).

Thanks for the welcome - it's a useful site you have here!

Agree re the config backup/restore through the update wizard. However don't the generic firmwares have a link in the gui to invoke the setup wizard to setup an initial config? As yet, I haven't found one!

These mostly reference service and variable info. I've had a look at the 7.4 manual and there's no top level SNMP command, or any apparent way to set community, trap host, etc. Just like the tg585v7 7.x to 8.x changes. Seems a strange thing to remove, although I suppose SNMP is less useful for ISPs nowadays with TR069 being more relevant. This does make the later Thomson firmwares a bit more difficult to monitor especially as they've always been a bit weak on the syslog front.

They are certainly supposed to. This is the default location/link (worth trying, as sometimes the pages are still there even if the link has been removed; it is also sometimes possible to create via the user.ini):

Yes indeed. r6.2.H has a mass of `:snmp' commands, which the later r7 does not - never realised that before.

Thanks for the URL pointer. Unfortunately this returns a blank page and checking the html returned gives a pretty content-less bit of code :-

Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<HTML>
<HEAD>
  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
  <TITLE>SpeedTouch&nbsp;780: &nbsp;0732JTJVY</TITLE>
  <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/styles.css">
  <script type='text/javascript' src='/util.js'></script>
</HEAD>
<BODY bgcolor="#FFFFFF">

  <span class='error'></span>

</BODY>
</HTML>

I can't help thinking this makes this particular ISP's firmware a bit difficult for someone who can't convert an existing config and who might not be familiar with the cli.

In fact, having had a quick look at the user.ini, there's a whole load of stuff set up for the ISP (ACS server, vlans, dhcrule, etc) which needs checking out to see if it can coexist with a 'normal' setup or needs removing. It's not really a generic firmware at all.

While the SIP changes in 7.x are nice, the lack of SNMP for mrtg means I'll probably be going back to 6.x once I've finished playing with it.

The German (also generic) firmware is the same. It has an embedded setup Wizard--unlike this one--but the only options are for Annex-B countries. The point is whether it will load on a router with a generic CFE and--in spite of the Software Variant (HD), which normally means that it will NOT load--as you have found, it will.

We are back to the importance of saving the current user.ini BEFORE updating, and restoring after. Alcatel/Thomson routers are exceptionally good in this area. I did approaching 10 firmware updates from early r6 to latest r8 on a 585, and on every occasion the original user.ini was intelligently updated & worked just fine on the new firmware. This was in spite of various commands--including undocumented commands--being removed in later firmware.

http://www.qdsl-support.de/showthread.php?t=16672

german 7.4.4.7 without isp based branding like in the elion.

only inet is set to pvc 1/32

translation to english (thx google):

Quote:

recover-st780(WL)-v7.4.4.7-open-en.exe:

This is the latest firmware for this device. It should be preferentially used, but is only in the English language.

recover-st780(WL)-v7.4.4.7-open-en-2.exe:

Experimental update with a custom firmware to German conditions, unfortunately again with an English web interface. Detailed information on the difference with preceding version, unfortunately, are not known. Feedback is always welcome.

Dear All,

I have installed the Estonian FW on 780WL which seemed to go OK. I managed to connect to the device after the FW upgrade using the web interface.

I decided to do a factory reset of the device because it would not give the option in the new FW setup wizard to configure my ADSL settings for my UK ISP. I was hoping that upgrade utility would backup and restore my previous settings but this did not happen.

Unfortunately on restart the device is not providing DHCP address and I can no longer connect even if I assing my self a static address and try to connect to the 192.168.1.254 gateway address.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
MM

Hello zzmusam, welcome to Modem-Help, and sorry to hear of your problems.

That's the bit that I'm *very* surprised to hear. The DHCP server is on by default in all firmware, precisely to prevent the problem that you are having.

Alcatel/Thomson models have had two IP ranges assigned, original + later. The original is maintained as a default, and many ISPs & even countries (Austria an example for the latter) keep to the original, even in the TG model range:
  • 10.0.0.138/24 - original
  • 192.168.1.254/24 - later

So, you can try `10.0.0.138' as the gateway address. Do not forget to assign a static IP for your computer within that sub-net (eg `10.0.0.1'), and the mask. Erm... (had to look it up) `255.255.255.0'.

I cannot help but think that it may be something else, though.

Let us know what happens.
